A “moving” charity visit put the spotlight on vital support for families in Basingstoke facing the unthinkable.
Basingstoke MP Luke Murphy visited Sebastian’s Action Trust in North Waltham on Friday, July 10, to meet families and learn more about the charity’s work supporting children with life-limiting or life-threatening conditions.
Sebastian’s Action Trust is a charity that supports families of children with life‑limiting and life‑threatening illnesses, offering practical, emotional and social help alongside opportunities to make memories together.
It runs dedicated centres and outreach services across the region, giving parents, siblings and wider family members somewhere they can turn for respite, advice and a sense of community at some of the most difficult moments in their lives.
The Trust’s work is seen as a lifeline by many families, helping to ease isolation, improve wellbeing and reduce the strain that long‑term illness can place on relationships and everyday life. By providing specialist support and space to breathe away from the clinical environment, it allows families to focus on time together, knowing there is expert help on hand when they need it most.
During the visit, Mr Murphy spoke with supported families, shared in their experiences, and saw first-hand the impact of the trust’s services.
He called it a “real privilege” to visit, saying “We are incredibly lucky to have such a special charity here in Basingstoke, supporting families of children with life-limiting or life-threatening conditions. With two purpose-built holiday apartments where families can spend precious time together, respite and counselling support for parents, a fully accessible swimming pool, garden and playground, it is easy to understand why so many families describe it as a home from home and the team as part of their extended family. I was particularly moved to visit the memorial garden for bereaved parents and families of children who were supported at this amazing place. The care, compassion and sense of community throughout the centre are remarkable.”
Katie Loosely, volunteer coordinator at Sebastian’s Action Trust, said: “Today, MP Luke Murphy took the time to visit Sebastian’s Action Trust, where he was warmly welcomed and given a comprehensive tour by Katie, one of our supported mums and dedicated employees. Throughout the day, he engaged with families—mums, dads, grandparents and children alike—demonstrating kindness and empathy. His thoughtful conversations highlighted his commitment to understanding the challenges faced by our community. We are grateful for his visit and the attention he brought to our cause. During the visit, the MP also met Jo and Assunta from the trust’s senior leadership team, along with various members of the family services team.
